AMIR AKBARI

(Chief Executive Officer – CEO)
Mr. Akbari holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick. He has over 11 years of industrial and academic experience as a mechanical engineer specializing in power generation cycles. He has led a variety of projects in the turbine manufacturing industry for power plants, and has managed a team of over 100 engineers and their supporting teams. Since 2015, Mr. Akbari has successfully led anessa through the early stages of research and development, investment fundraising, and into commercialization.

DR. FAROUGH MOTASEMI

(Chief Technical Officer)
Dr. Motasemi holds a PhD specializing in biomass and waste-to-energy and bio-products from the University of New Brunswick. With an in-depth knowledge of biochemical and thermochemical processes, he has incorporated leading-edge techniques in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for energy recovery from waste materials into anessa’s products. Dr. Motasemi is responsible for technology development at anessa, including the development of waste-to-energy algorithms.

DR. KONSTANTIN NASARTSCHUK

(VP Product Development)
Dr. Nasartschuk holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of New Brunswick. He has over 10 years of experience in applied research on software systems and virtual machine technology. His research has resulted in over a dozen published conference and journal papers. During his extensive studies, he has contributed to several large open-source software products in collaboration with Fraunhofer IAIS, IBM and Intel. Dr. Nasartschuk designs the software architecture and manages the development of anessa technologies.

ROBERT DIDIODATO

(VP Business Development)
Mr. DiDiodato holds a B.Sc. from the University of New Brunswick and a B.Ed. from St. Thomas University. He has held senior management and business development roles in technology startup firms for over 20 years. He has extensive experience developing B2B models, partnerships and teams that have led to high growth in several international markets. Mr. DiDiodato leads anessa’s business development and sales teams, which are tasked with providing solutions that exceed customer expectations.

DAVID NEWMAN

(Board of Directors – Chair)

David Newman lived in Europe and the Middle East until 2016 when he returned to the UK. After returning, he was the Executive Director of Greenpeace Italy 1994-1997 after many years as a volunteer; from 1999 until 2014 he led the Italian composting and biogas association CIC and he led the Italian Bioplastics Association from 2011 to 2015. From 2012 to 2016 he was President of the International Solid Waste Association. During this time (2012-13) he was personal advisor to the Italian Minister of Environment, Andrea Orlando. David founded and leads the Bio Based and Biodegradable Industries Association UK since 2015 which works to promote the bioeconomy in the UK.  He was President of the World Biogas Association from November 2016 to July 2021. He is a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Group at DEFRA and a chartered member of the CIWM. His e-book “Everything is Connected, understanding a complicated world“ has been published in September 2020.

GREG STEWART

(Board of Directors – Observer)

Greg Stewart has deep experience in finance and early stage companies. He currently holds several positions in the start-up world, most prominently President of GreenSky Capital and Director of the GreenSky Accelerator Funds. He holds board positions in six Canadian technology start-ups and is President of Istic, Illic Pictures, an independent film production company. In the past, Greg has been an Equity Analyst at Neuberger Berman, and CFO of American Strategic Insurance, a Florida-based insurance carrier that grew from $38 million to $506 million in revenue during his tenure.

Greg has a BSBA degree from the University of Florida and an MBA degree from the University of Toronto (Rotman), each with Honours.

DR. KENNETH KENT

(Board of Directors – Member)

Dr. Kenneth Kent (P.Eng) cofounded anessa in 2015. Prior to anessa, he joined the faculty at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton in 2002 after obtaining his Ph.D. (University of Victoria, 2003), M.Sc. (1999), and B.Sc. Hons. (Memorial University, 1996). Ken’s interests include cloud computing, high performance computing, embedded systems, and software engineering. Eager to apply his skills in industry, he has completed significant research on commercial technologies in collaboration with numerous multi-national partners that has led to 8 patents and over 150 refereed journal and conference publications. Dr. Kent is recognized for his contributions through various awards including UNB Research Scholar, NBIF Star Mentor of the Year, IBM Faculty of the Year, IBM Project of the Year, and several best paper awards.

THOMAS BIRD, P.Eng

(Board of Directors – Member)

Thomas is a capable investment professional with a positive attitude. He administers the Venture Capital, Startup Investment, and Innovation Voucher funding programs at NBIF. He honed his organizational skills while earning a degree in civil engineering as well as a graduate degree in Technology Management & Entrepreneurship from the University of New Brunswick.
